Dior Prize for Photography and Visual Arts for Young Talents 2020

The third edition of the Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents, titled Face to Face, presents the work of award winner Pamela Tulizo alongside thirteen finalists from leading photography schools around the world.

Originally scheduled to open at LUMA Arles' Parc des Ateliers, the exhibition is presented online due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The jury, chaired by Viviane Sassen and comprising Rachel Rose, Maja Hoffmann, Emma Lavigne, Simon Baker, Jérôme Pulis, and Helena Christensen, met virtually to select the winning project.

Presented in partnership with the ENSP and hosted by LUMA Arles.

Conversation between Pamela Tulizo and Viviane Sassen

In this conversation, Pamela Tulizo reflects on her journey from working as a journalist in Goma to embracing photography as a space for freedom and creative expression.

Winner of the 2020 Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents, she explains how staging her photographs allows her to tell richer, more nuanced stories—particularly those of women in the Kivu region. Through her work, she seeks to highlight their strength, resilience, and complexity, challenging the one-dimensional narratives often portrayed by international media.

Tulizo also discusses the challenges she has faced as a woman photographer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as her commitment to education, the empowerment of young women, and helping them reclaim and tell their own stories.
