Celebrating the opening of Gary Hill’s major installation Circular Breathing (1994) at LUMA Arles, join the artist for a discussion about his work.

Hill’s practice transcends boundaries, using video and sound to create sophisticated compositions that reflect on human experience with profound delicacy and intensity. Gary Hill on His Work

To mark the opening of Circular Breathing at LUMA Arles, we invited Gary Hill to reflect on his career and discuss the works featured in the exhibition.

A pioneering figure in video art, Gary Hill has spent decades creating work that brings together moving image, sound, language, and the body. Drawing on references to music, science, dreams, and altered states of consciousness, his practice examines the mechanisms of perception and the ways in which our understanding of reality and meaning is shaped.

In Circular Breathing, there is the sense of a disturbing narrative accumulating and dissipating through each successive set of scenes. Images from the streets of Tangier, a ship on the open sea and the interior of a mosque juxtapose with a man chopping wood and a cigarette burning slowly in an ashtray. An older woman reading and large thick hands loading a pistol unfold next to bladed stems and a close-up of an insect dragging its prey. Throughout all the segments, there is the recurring image of a woman’s hands playing a piano.
