Book signing "James Barnor: Stories. Le portfolio (1947-1987)" by the artist
James Barnor

A reference book on the work of the Ghanaian photographer, it presents the images chosen for the exhibition and provides historical, biographical and artistic contextualisation through period documents and a series of essays and interviews.

The design of this portfolio, which will be included in the LUMA Foundation's collection, is part of its Living Archives project. From Accra to London and from London to Accra, from the end of the colonial era to the beginning of the 1990s, from studio portraits to press commissions, the exhibition offers a kaleidoscopic look at the work of the Ghanaian photographer, which is already present in major international collections (MoMA, Centre Pompidou, Tate).

For his first retrospective in France, James Barnor has assembled, with LUMA, a completely original portfolio of his favourite images. These were selected by re-examining his vast archive of 30,000 negatives and several hundred prints and period documents.

James Barnor (1929 –) founded his first photo studio in Accra (Ghana) in 1949. Also active as a photojournalist, he photographed the movement that led his country to independence in 1957. From 1959 to 1969 he lived in London, where he documented the diasporic experience of the Swinging Sixties. After training in color photography processes, he returned to Ghana in 1970 to disseminate the techniques. A major retrospective of his works was held at the Serpentine Gallery (London) in 2021.
