CORRESPONDENCES (Live) Soundwalk Collective & Patti Smith

A unique performance by Soundwalk Collective Patti Smith that blurs the boundaries between concert, installation, and cinematic experience

LUMA Arles presents CORRESPONDENCES (Live), a powerful audiovisual performance by Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith, unfolding as a singular encounter between sound, poetry, film, and installation. Presented on the occasion of the opening of LUMA Arles’ exhibition CORRESPONDENCES, this live performance brings the decade-long collaboration between Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith into an immersive journey through fragile landscapes, human histories, and the invisible forces that bind them.

At the heart of the performance are field recordings gathered by Stephan Crasneanscki across some of the planet’s most charged and vulnerable environmentsfrom melting glaciers, to deserts, forests, and urban landscapes. Far from simply documenting these places, the recordings form a sonic architecture that surrounds the audience, carrying the textures of wind, ice, stone, water, animal presence, and human trace.

Projected film outtakes and original footage move between intimate encounters and vast landscapes, composing a visual constellation of echoes between people, places, and moments in time. Within this shifting environment, Patti Smith’s voice and spoken word bring together literature, personal reflection, historical memory, and poetic attention. Her presence turns the performance into both a lament and an invocation, a call to listen more deeply to what is vanishing, what remains, and what still insists on being heard.

Performed live by Patti Smith, Stephan Crasneanscki, and Simone Merli of Soundwalk Collective, together with Lucy Railton, Diego Espinosa Cruz Gonzales, and Pedro Maia, CORRESPONDENCES (Live) is an experience of resonance across time and geography, where sound, image, and voice answer one another, and where listening becomes a way of attending to the world anew.

Soundwalk Collective

Stephan Crasneanscki (b. 1969, Odessa; lives and works in New York, US) and Simone Merli (b. 1978, Milan; lives and works in Berlin, Germany).

Composed of contemporary artist Stephan Crasneanscki and producer Simone Merli, Soundwalk Collective integrate sound, film, and mixed media in site- and context-specific artwork. Evolving along multi-disciplinary lines, they have cultivated long-term creative collaborations with artist and writer Patti Smith, late director Jean-Luc Godard, photographer Nan Goldin, choreographer Sasha Waltz, and actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, among others.

Central to their artistic philosophy is the exploration of sound as a medium to navigate and interpret the complexities of human experience and environment. Their original score for Laura Poitras’s All the Beauty and the Bloodshed contributed to the film’s Golden Lion win at the Venice Film Festival.

Soundwalk Collective have performed and exhibited at a diverse range of institutions, including BAM, New York; MAC/CCB Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture Centre, Lisbon; Centre Pompidou, Paris; documenta, Athens and Kassel; Fondation Cartier, Paris; Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan; kurimanzutto, New York; KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Louvre Abu Dhabi; Manifesta, Palermo; Mendes Wood DM, São Paulo; Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Onassis Stegi, Athens; Piknic Seoul, Reethaus, Berlin; Volksbühne, Berlin; and Zaha Hadid’s Mobile Art Pavilion.
