Interview with Stan Douglas

  • Speaker(s): Stan Douglas
  • Duration: 4 min
  • © Victor & Simon

In an interview conducted for his exhibition Bodies Never Lie, presented at LUMA in 2026, artist Stan Douglas reflects on how historical narratives are built. For him, history is made of fragments and possibilities, and reconstructing the past always involves invention. By combining multiple visual sources, he creates hybrid images that expose the incompleteness of representation.

Music also plays a central role in his work, revealing how communities move through time, from open improvisation to more rigid structures. This perspective resonates with 1950s Spain, where flamenco was appropriated by the authorities while its Romani creators continued to practice it privately. For Douglas, these gestures and bodies remind us that “bodies never lie.”
