Interviewed on the occasion of It’s Urgent!, presented at LUMA Arles in 2020, artist Françoise Sémiramoth discusses her dialogue with the work of Caravaggio and her collaboration with writer Maryse Condé. For her poster, she reinterprets The Conversion of Saint Paul, transposing the scene to a Caribbean setting and using color as a way to question representations associated with skin color.
Through this reappropriation, Françoise Sémiramoth brings different periods, places, and imaginaries into dialogue. Her work examines dichotomies inherited from history and invites us to move beyond prejudice to make way for new forms of representation.
