Interviewed on the occasion of It’s Urgent!, presented at LUMA Arles in 2020, artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen discusses his work exploring landscapes, ecosystems, and extinct species. His time in Arles and his exploration of the Camargue led him to focus on a “hyperlocal” environment and the often-invisible worlds that exist beneath our feet.
Through photography, sound, and virtual reality, he collects and connects natural elements from different periods in time, revealing relationships between species, places, and temporalities. This approach informs a broader reflection on how we perceive and inhabit landscapes, as well as on new forms of collaboration between artists, scientists, and local environments.
