    It’s Urgent!: The Concept of Opacity with Julien Creuzet (2020)

    Interviewed on the occasion of It’s Urgent!, presented at LUMA Arles in 2020, artist Julien Creuzet discusses the references and ideas that inform his work. In particular, he reflects on his connection to Édouard Glissant’s thought and the concept of opacity, which invites us to accept what cannot be immediately understood or grasped in others.

    Through his poster, conceived as a composite assemblage, he also explores the notions of “négritude” and “blackness,” drawing in particular on the work of musician and linguist Jacques Coursil. Through questions of identity, language, memory, and emancipation, Julien Creuzet examines our relationship to others and the ways in which individual and collective histories shape our perception of the world.
