    The American Supreme Court in Space: Samuel R. Delany’s The Ballad of Beta-2

    In this presentation, Isiah Lavender III examines the imagined laws that shape African American science fiction. In doing so, he offers a counter-narrative that reassesses the role of American science fiction in conversations about race and racism. Drawing on the critical concept of the noirum, he explores Samuel R. Delany’s often-overlooked 1965 novella The Ballad of Beta-2. Through this analysis, he considers the creative responses to the idea of colorblindness over time and examines the consequences of ignoring the ways it is embedded in our social structures.
