The Thin-Skinned Earth

What if the Earth were neither a globe viewed from space nor a living organism, but a skin? Drawing on Critical Zone sciences, philosopher Jeanne Etelain explores the metaphors that shape the ways we think about the Earth and inhabit the world.

Bringing philosophy into dialogue with Earth sciences, feminist theory, and decolonial thought, she examines the limitations of Gaia as a figure of harmonious totality and proposes instead that we understand the Earth as a sensitive, vulnerable, and relational surface. From the lower atmosphere to groundwater systems, this thin layer where the conditions for habitability emerge becomes the site of a reflection on the interdependencies, differences, and conflicts that run through the living world.
